Did you know that the well-known film music used in ‘Gladiator’ was made with an invented non-existing language?
Hans Zimmer composed the music, and as for the songs and choirs it was made by Lisa Gerrard. The words are not real words – they have no particular readable linguistic logical contents, they are what we can call for ‘sound-words’ – you know…la-la-lu-lu–who-lu zulu mino mayo…and on and on. Just sounds made by human voices. Yes – in this case Gerrard wrote down ‘sound-words’ so to fit in with the atmospherically ‘ethnic’ music used in ‘Gladiator’. When it was released in 2000, I bought the CD which had all the tracks from the movie. But I always kept wondering what language was used in those songs…not knowing (at that time) it was invented by humans.
Just like the babbling of the sort of ‘tongues’ found in Pentecostalism and other Charismatic Christian groups. I came from Pentecostalism, when I quit that in 2004. It came clear to me that the doctrine of the Pentecostal movements was entirely in error, compared to the Bible. But as I reflect upon these things now, 2026, it just dawned on me that the ‘tongues’ heard in Pentecostal meetings fits right in with the invented language found in ‘Gladiator’.
The composer, Lisa Gerrard, was kind of ‘exposing’ the false ‘speaking-in-tongues’ found in Pentecostalism – not knowing that she had. She had proven that regular human beings can produce and invent a fake ‘language’ – even used in songs!
Thank you!! Lisa Gerrard – you have contributed to proving that ‘tongues’ in Christian groups are no other than a human linguistic invention, - and not real language found in the world.
If the singer, Lisa Gerrard, could create a quasi-language for use in the film ‘Gladiator’ – then it was and still is, fully possible – and I believe this is true as well – that the believers in Azusa Street, L.A. 1906-1913 – invented and mimicked…trying to imagine how and what ‘tongues’ must have sounded…and this grabbed hold of much of Christianity all the way up to our time. It is amusing to read of her invented language, as she called it for ‘Idioglossia’ !! To me, that tells of an idiocy – a foolish thing, a false thing. Lisa Gerrard was entirely right in her assumption of the false ‘language’ she invented. Not because she wanted to fool the public, but rather to enhance the mystical ethnic atmosphere displayed in that movie – ‘Gladiator’.
The hero Gladiator was played by the known actor Russel Crowe, whom we can observe in the image above. He had the actor Joaquin Phoenix playing the envious adversary – the son of the recently dead Caesar, Marcus Aurelius. His son was Commodus. The time these Roman leaders existed was: Reigned from 161 to 180 CE. He was 40 years of age when becoming Caesar. He is counted as the final Caesar of the ‘Pax Romana’ epoch. Commodus inherited the throne in 180 CE; just a little background for your education. Richard Harris played Marcus Aurelius in the movie.
Tongues is now part of doctrine, since the Assemblies of God (Pentecostal churches) was established in in April 1914 during a general council meeting held in Hot Springs, Arkansas. Roughly 300 people gathered to form this Pentecostal fellowship, seeking to bring unity and doctrinal stability to a rapidly growing revival movement, often considered a direct outcome of the Azusa Street Revival.
A whole movement was established upon a lie…since they believed that God had sent a repetition of His divine intervention as seen in Acts 2 and Pentecost in Jerusalem…with tongues as a main factor. However, they do agree that tongues and miracles and signs had not been seen or heard in history for 1878 years. In this one fact, they are right. God stopped it all as we find the close of Book of Acts in 62 CE. Their great mistake was to preach that tongues and miracles had been re-established to the Christian church on earth. This has brought instability and unrest in Christianity, and much dispute and harsh arguing.
THE REAL THING IN ACTS 2
But at Pentecost in Acts 2:1-11, we certainly find that there were real genuine ‘tongues’ appearing/sounding aloud in the flock of Jesus-believers, who all of a sudden spoke simultaneously in 14-16 different existing languages, quote from NASB,
Øverst i skjemaet
1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.
2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.
3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.
4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.
6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language.
7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why, are not all these who are speaking Galileans?
8 "And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?
9 "Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,
10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya around Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,
11 Cretans and Arabs -we hear them in our own tongues speaking of the mighty deeds of God."

The "invented language" in Gladiator (2000), most famously used in the song "Now We Are Free" over the closing credits, was created by Australian singer and composer Lisa Gerrard.
This language is known as an idioglossia, or a personal, invented language, rather than a structured fictional language like Tolkien's Elvish. Here is how it came about:
Musical Invention: Lisa Gerrard, who collaborated with Hans Zimmer on the musical score, is known for her unique ability to blend made-up languages with dramatic, emotional tones.
"Now We Are Free": The lyrics for the final song, which has become iconic, were composed in this idioglossia to create an emotional, universal feel rather than a literal translation.
Purpose: The invented language was used to enhance the haunting and soulful atmosphere of the soundtrack, allowing the music to be felt universally without needing to understand the specific words.
Callback to Zulu: While not a spoken language in the movie, the "Germanic" battle chant in the opening battle scene was borrowed from the 1964 film Zulu, as director Ridley Scott felt the Germans needed a war chant and used one of his favorite films as inspiration.
Other Linguistic Inaccuracies in Gladiator:
The Germanic leader in the opening scene shouts "Ihr seid verfluchte Hunde!" (You are cursed dogs!), which is modern German rather than an old Germanic dialect, often delivered with a heavy Scottish or British accent.
High-born Romans speak with British Received Pronunciation to signal their elite status, a common Hollywood convention.
Well, - if you never have heard fake tongues (such as I have heard it when I was still a member of a Pentecostal/Word of Faith church here in Norway) – all you have to do is check out the sound-track at YouTube…and you will get a certain hint as to what we are talking about.
Lisa Gerrard used such ‘language’ to enhance the atmosphere in ‘Gladiator’ – but in Pentecostal churches and the likes, such invented ‘language’ is frequently used to try to prove that God is with them and present in the meetings!
